Many of the styling cues from the Evolv made it onto the production version of the RX-8, such as the rear suicide doors and the sleek coupe-like design.

The RX-Evolv concept featured a 276-horsepower, twin-rotor rotary engine placed behind the front axle for optimal weight distribution. It also included a six-speed sequential manual gearbox and a fuel tank positioned within the wheelbase for a perfect 50/50 weight balance. The concept showcased futuristic features such as an ID access card for unlocking doors and starting the engine, as well as Active Cornering Brake for additional braking force. While Mazda may never release a purely rotary-powered sports car again, they are focused on utilizing the new rotary engine iteration as a generator for future vehicles.

Mazda still retains the RX-Evolv concept and will showcase it at the Automobile Council 2024 in Chiba, Japan. The exhibit’s theme, “History and Future of Rotary Sports Car Concept,” will feature the RX-Evolv alongside the Iconic SP concept, bridging the gap between the rotary engine’s past and future. While a purely rotary-powered sports car may be a thing of the past, Mazda’s commitment to innovation and excitement in their vehicles continues to draw attention.
